Our roofs are one of the most important (and expensive) components of our homes. They protect us all year long from rain and other elements. This is why it can be so catastrophic when they start to show signs of rotting,

At Blue Fox Roofing & Renovations, we know how important it is to keep your roof in good condition. We know of a few key tips that can help you preserve your roof all year long, and we’re here to share them with you. Read below to learn more!

How Can I Make My Roof Last Longer?

When it comes to your roof, one of the most important things you can do to prevent rotting is to stay on top of yearly maintenance. Here’s how:

Schedule Regular Roof Inspections

If you’ve noticed a few missing shingles on your roof over the year or suspect there may be a leak, don’t put off an inspection. Although some repairs might seem minor and not worth addressing, they can lead to larger issues if left untreated.

Scheduling a roof inspection with a professional technician is very important and will include checking for the following issues and more:

  • Broken shingles
  • Clogged roof valleys
  • Clogged gutters
  • Debris and vegetation on the roof
  • Cracked or failing seals in pipes, plumbing vents and attic vents

Keep The Gutters Clear

If you notice that water regularly overflows out of your gutters when it rains, have them cleaned immediately. Having clean gutters is vital to ensure that water is not pooling on your roof. If you have your gutters cleaned by a professional and the problem persists, you may want to consider having new ones installed.

Clean Consistently

Roofs have a habit of collecting debris, like fallen tree limbs and clumps of leaves. Make sure you’re not allowing scraps of foliage to collect on your roof by using a leaf blower or soft bristle broom. Remember to use caution whenever working on your roof!

Replace Insulation In Your Attic As Needed

Did you know that the insulation in your attic works to protect your roof from humidity and moisture? Moisture is your roof’s number one enemy, so it’s crucial to replace old insulation as needed.

Consider Having Drip Edge Installed

Drip edge is metal flashing installed along the perimeter of your roof near the gutters that allows water to flow seamlessly from the roof to the gutters. This will protect your fascia board, the long thin board that runs along the lower outer edge of your roof.

In North Carolina, drip edge is not required by code, but it is extremely helpful in preventing your fascia from rotting. If you’ve had issues in the past with needing frequent fascia board replacement, drip edge may be perfect for you!
