What Does a Thorough Roof Inspection Reveal? | Matthews NC Storm Inspection

What Does a Thorough Storm Damage Inspection Reveal? | Matthews, NC

A professional roof inspection involves more than looking for hail damage. It also means evaluating the condition of the entire roofing system.

In this video, Jay from Blue Fox Roofing & Renovations continues his hands-on storm damage inspection of an approximately 18-year-old roof in Matthews, North Carolina.

While examining the roof for possible hail damage, Jay identifies several important details, including deteriorating exterior wood trim, properly installed wall flashing, and the condition of the roof's ridge ventilation.

He also checks the home's downspouts for dents that could provide supporting evidence of hail impacts. Examining soft metal components is an important part of distinguishing potential storm damage from normal wear and aging.

One particularly interesting discovery is the quality of the existing roof flashing. Installed in 2008, the flashing was carefully formed and continues to protect the home nearly two decades later. Jay explains why proper flashing installation matters and why aging flashing should be evaluated when planning a future roof replacement.

He also demonstrates how walking on the wrong portion of a ridge vent can potentially damage the vent or loosen its fasteners.

The takeaway: A thorough roof inspection should identify potential storm damage, recognize existing roofing problems, and evaluate workmanship that may affect the roof's long-term performance.

Blue Fox Roofing & Renovations provides professional storm damage inspections, roof leak investigations, roof repairs, and roof replacements throughout Matthews, Charlotte, Mint Hill, Indian Trail, Waxhaw, Weddington, and surrounding communities.

Oh no, my chalk!

I'm going after the chalk I dropped, but you can see here this is rotting out a little bit.

Why is it rotting? Well, it's wood, and it wasn't prepped correctly. But they've got flashing behind it, and that's why they're not having leaks inside. So that's good.

Here's the same thing.

Oh, look! My chalk!

You know how hard I work for that?

Look, it's just sitting here waiting, along with all this other debris, right? Which can also cause problems. But in this case, it helped me!

While I'm here, I'll look at this downspout.

I don't feel any dents on it. No sense chalking it until then.

I don't feel anything on here either. That's why we chalk it.

Looks like a little something there.

So, 18 years ago, they redid the flashing here. She told me the name of the company, and they're pretty reputable.

They did it in 2008, and see that? They bent the flashing in.

So I give them kudos. Good job, guys!

I can tell from the ground that this was redone when they did the roof, so kudos again.

You can see the silicone caulk here, but the flashing is actually bent in. They did a good job, and that's why it's holding up.

I don't know if I would reuse it if we replaced the roof, because it's been there for almost 20 years, and we don't know if it'll last another 20.

Ooh, a lot of peppering over there.

Why does everybody have pools and I don't?

Okay, for everybody watching, I'm walking on the edge right here. This is where the nails are, and this is a thicker cap.

If I were to walk in the middle, it would flex, and I could lift the nails.

So I'm not doing that.
