Can You Temporarily Repair a Leaking Roof? | Waxhaw NC Roof Repair

Temporary Roof Leak Repair: How a Gutter Wore a Hole Through the Shingles

Can a gutter cause a roof leak? Absolutely—and sometimes the damage isn't obvious until you get up on the roof.

In this video, Jay from Blue Fox Roofing & Renovations investigates a roof leak. He finds the cause is a gutter that rests directly on the asphalt shingles.

Over time, normal expansion, contraction, and slight movement of the gutter gradually wore a hole in the shingle, allowing rainwater to intrude into the living space.

Jay demonstrates a practical temporary roof repair using metal flashing to cover the damaged area and redirect water flowing down the roof valley away from the opening.

He also positions a second flashing to help shed water past the vulnerable area, creating a temporary barrier designed to reduce further water intrusion until a permanent repair can be completed.

Why choose a temporary roof repair?

Not every roof leak requires an immediate, extensive reconstruction. Depending on the roof's age, condition, and the location of the damage, a temporary repair may help protect the home while the homeowner considers longer-term repair or replacement options.

However, temporary repairs are not guaranteed permanent solutions. The underlying gutter placement and damaged roofing materials still need to be addressed.

The takeaway: Don't ignore a leaking roof. Work with a qualified roofing professional to identify the issue and plan a solution, even a temporary roof repair, to stop water from coming into your home.

Blue Fox Roofing & Renovations provides professional roof leak investigations, roof repairs, and roof replacements throughout Charlotte, Matthews, Waxhaw, Weddington, Indian Trail, Mint Hill, and surrounding North Carolina communities.

Okay, I was on this roof and looked at everything. Everything seemed okay, but the homeowner is having a leak in this area.

You can see where my arrow is pointing.

What's happening is that the gutter is resting on the shingles. When that happens, expansion and contraction, movement, and water flowing through the gutter cause it to shift a little bit.

Eventually, that movement wears away the shingles.

If you look here, there's a hole right there. So any water coming down this area is going to find its way in.

We can prevent some additional problems.

Actually, I'll leave this doubled up.

There you go. That should stop the water from coming in.

And then, for fun, let's see if we can kick the water past this, right to there.

See? Now that shouldn't go anywhere. Nice and tight.

Okay, that's it!

Now, water coming down the valley is going to pass by this area. And if any water does sneak underneath here, we've got that metal in place as an additional barrier.

So there's our temporary fix until we can repair it properly.
